III.2 — The diagnosis
The presenting symptom is rarely the disease.
Both crafts begin the same way: a chart, a quiet room, and the discipline not to touch anything yet. A reading comes in hot — a pain, a price, a headline — and the amateur treats it. The steward asks what else would explain it. Fever is not the infection; the falling quote is not the business. Pattern recognition is the root skill here, and patterns live in base rates, not in stories.
So the differential is run in order of boredom. First the common thing, then the cyclical thing, then the story everyone loves, and last — only ever last — the exception. It is almost never the exception.

III.4 — The acute episode
Every long chart contains a night like this.
The line falls out of its channel, the room gets loud, and everything in you votes for action. This is the hour both disciplines trained for, and the training is identical: check the vitals, not the mood. Re-read the plan that was written in daylight. Do not confuse motion with treatment.
The position and the patient ask the same question at the trough — do you still believe the work you did when you could think? If the answer is yes, the intervention is to hold. It is the hardest dose on the shelf, and it is the one that works.

III.5 — The long course
Time is the active ingredient.
Nothing on this page works quickly. Recovery and compounding share a shape: flat for longer than anyone finds comfortable, then suddenly obvious. The first year of a good habit looks identical to nothing at all — which is why so few courses are finished.
Both crafts pay the patient and punish the busy. The fee for waiting is boredom, and boredom is the cheapest thing a steward will ever buy.
